Rescue Squad / EMS Fund
Emergencies Happen Everyone experiences emergencies from time to time – they're simply a part of life. Unfortunately, they're also costly. For instance, a typical emergency ambulance transport can often exceed $500, and most insurance providers, including Medicare, will not cover the full amount of an ambulance bill.
The Wake County Rescue Squad EMS Fund
Fortunately, Wake County Emergency Medical Services offers all residents of Wake County relief from direct cost of ambulance services. For $60 per year, you and all permanent residents of your household can receive emergency 911 ambulance service anywhere in Wake County as many times as needed. Your annual subscription fee relieves you of any direct costs of 911 ambulance service not paid by your insurance. The plan covers all members of your household from October 1 to September 30 of the following year.
In addition to the coverage your family receives, all of the money from your subscription membership is returned to Wake EMS or the rescue squad that serves the area where you live. This provides valuable operating funds to ensure the continued high level of emergency medical care that you have come to expect.
Join Today
While all of us like to believe that we will never have the need to dial 911, every day citizens across Wake County need an ambulance due to an illness or injury. That is why you should act now and join the Rescue Squad/EMS Fund. Because the last thing you should have to worry about in an emergency is paying for the ambulance bill.

File of Life When you are sick and you call 911 you will get a series of questions which prompts 911 to dispatch EMS very fast or normal speed. They also give us information to let us know what is going on with you. When you are sick you do not feel like answering a lot of questions so we have created a form for you to fill out and place on your refrigerator. This form will speak for you and speed up time. It is, however, very important that you keep this form updated at all times. To receive a copy of the form click here.
History of Eastern Wake EMS
Eastern Wake EMS, formerly Knightdale, Wendell, and Zebulon EMS, was formed in July 2005 . The three departments began discussing a merger after the three departments received budget cuts in 2004-05.
After numerous meetings with the three Boards, each agency voted to move forward with the merger. A steering committee consisting of three members of each agency and the County Manager were put together to spearhead these efforts. They were tasked to write policy and procedures, bylaws, personnel policies and to put together a budget on behalf of all three departments. The name of Eastern Wake Emergency Medical Service, Inc. (EWEMS)was chosen by a vote of the memberships of each agency.
Wendell EMS was formulated as the first EMS agency in Wake County in 1962 and they were chosen to be the surviving agency. Wendell officially became Eastern Wake EMS on May 1, 2005. Knightdale and Zebulon folded into Eastern Wake EMS on July 1, 2005. During this process we worked closely with Dr. Myers, our system Medical Director, and Ryan Lewis, the system QA Coordinator, for the Wake County EMS System on how many ambulances are needed in Eastern Wake County to provide the service and where those ambulances need to be positioned in order to improve response times. We took an EMS System approach instead of a territorial approach as we made these decisions.
The members and the administrative staff are excited about the future of Eastern Wake EMS.
